Mystics’ Sonia Citron gets 100% honest on clutch basket in 4OT win vs. Fire

The Washington Mystics and the Portland Fire must be icing their entire bodies right now after going through a grueling contest that needed four overtimes on Sunday.

In the end, the Mystics escaped with a one-point win, 124-123, courtesy of Sonia Citron’s clutch bucket with 21.4 seconds left. Washington and Portland tied the league record for the longest game. Washington also defeated the Seattle Storm in four overtimes in 2001.

Citron finished with a career-high 32 points on top of six rebounds and four assists. She struggled from the field, but shot 13-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Her confidence never wavered, even though she was misfiring. When asked about her last bucket, the 22-year-old guard kept it straightforward.

“I don’t think any of us on either team wanted to play another overtime,” said Citron in the postgame interview.

“It wasn’t pretty, but honestly, just get the ball in the basket and let’s get stops, let’s really try to end it this time.”

The Fire had multiple chances to win. After Carla Leite missed her second free throw with 13.1 seconds remaining, Fried Buhner got the offensive rebound, but she missed her close attempt. She grabbed her own miss, leading Portland to call a timeout with 3.4 seconds left. Leite, however, muffed her floater in the ensuing play.

The Mystics ended a two-game skid and improved to 9-9, while the Fire absorbed their third straight defeat and fell to 8-12.

Citron, who is having another impressive campaign, had plenty of help, with Michaela Onyenwere tallying 30 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and Kiki Iriafen adding 27 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

Washington will have a much-needed mini-break before hosting the Atlanta Dream on Thursday.
