'My priority is Australian cricket' - Pat Cummins clears his playing stance ahead of busy international schedule

Australia’s Test and One Day International (ODI) captain Pat Cummins has committed to the national team, claiming that they are still their number one priority. This comes after reports stating how prominent members of the team were left unimpressed by Cricket Australia's initial central contract offers earlier this month. 

Cummins stated that he still wishes to represent Australia in every single Test match that they compete in. The right-arm fast bowler also talked about representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying that the tournament's window falls perfectly during the Australian break, allowing players to come and play in India. 

"Nothing has changed for me, my priority is Australian cricket, No. 1, particularly Test cricket. As Test captain, I never want to miss any Test cricket and make myself available for as many Aussie games as I can. The IPL is good in that it normally fits in our holiday break, so that's the obvious one, but they are probably my main focuses and I don't see that's going to change at all for the next few years for me at least,” Cummins said during the New Balance Grey Days 2026, via ESPNcricinfo.

According to the aforementioned source, with Australia having a tight Test schedule ahead of the 2027 IPL, there is expected to be deep conversations between Cummins, Cricket Australia and SRH regarding the availability of their captain. The Aussies are set to play 10 Test matches between December and March, including a five-match Border-Gavaskar series against India away from home. Next year also sees them travel to England to compete in the Ashes, something Cummins will be central to winning. 

However, the current captain has revealed that he feels good and injury-free and is raring to represent Australia in all the coming Test matches.

“Stress fractures in your back do recur quite often and we just wanted to eliminate all that risk to make sure that if I had a problem in six months, that could rule me out of a lot of those 20 Tests. So physically, I feel great. My back's fully healed, really strong. We took a very low-risk approach to the rehab to give myself the best chance to play all those Test matches,” he added. 

Cummins is set to miss the white-ball series in Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is worth mentioning that the pacer has played just two ODI matches since guiding his side to the 2023 ICC World Cup title in India. 

Following the IPL, Australia’s first Test assignment will be against Bangladesh on home soil starting from 13 August.
