A horror crash marred the speedway meeting between Plymouth Gladiators and Poole Pirates on Friday night.

Plymouth’s Tobias Thomsen was left with severe injuries after colliding with Poole rider Richard Lawson.

The pair had been entering the third bend when they came together and were sent through an air fence.

Although Lawson was able to walk away from the incident, Thomsen suffered a brain bleed and a punctured lung.

He also broke his femur and was left with several broken ribs as a result of the crash.

Paramedics spent over an hour attending to him with two ambulances at Wimborne Road Stadium in Poole.

The crash had occurred just seconds into Thomsen’s debut for the Gladiators.

Despite the horror collision, the meet continued whilst the Danish rider was taken to hospital.

Poole went on to win 47-43 before following it up with a 48-42 victory at Plymouth on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Thomsen has provided an update on his condition from hospital.

The 31-year-old shared pictures from his bed showing heavy bruising on his face and neck along with cuts to his face.

Having suffered small fractures around his eye socket, Thomsen was also left with a gash under his swollen right eye.

He also needed a rod inserted from his knee to his hip, although his injuries are thought not to be life-threatening.

In a message alongside the post, Thomsen wrote: “Little update here from Poole Hospital.

“I have broken my femur and have had a titanium bar inserted from the knee up to the hip to stabilize it.

“In the face, around the eye, I have three minor fractures in the bones, which fortunately do not require surgery.

“In addition I have broken three ribs and a punctured lung. And in the end I have a small haemorrhage in the brain – nothing serious, the doctor said.

“What’s going to happen from here, I’m not sure yet. Going to do my best to get back in shape and see where this takes me in the future.

“I want to race again because it’s what makes me happy and feel alive.

“I really thought I had everything under control at this time. But getting hit from behind is hard to avoid.

“This is a race accident and I have no grudge against Lawson – I know this could happen.

“All the focus now is on getting back in shape. Thank you for all the love and support.”

Thomsen had been making his debut for Plymouth after spending the last two seasons with Poole.

During that time he won back-to-back Cab Direct Championships, having also previously raced for Birmingham Brummies in the past.
