Substitute goalkeepers Dean Henderson and James Trafford tried to diffuse the situation after a gritty meeting in Atlanta.

Rogers wasn’t the only England player to take umbrage with the Argentina squad.

Jude Bellingham also needed to be pulled away from the action by unused substitute Ollie Watkins.

Aston Villa star Rogers was a surprise starter against Argentina, featuring off the right at the expense of Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke.

It was Rogers, though, who provided the assist for Anthony Gordon’s opener 10 minutes after the restart.

After going behind, Argentina piled on the pressure and they eventually went ahead with five minutes to go as Enzo Fernandez fired past Jordan Pickford from range.

And the 2022 champions took the initiative in second-half stoppage time.

Alexis Mac Allister hit the post for a second time with a low drive and the ball eventually found its way to Lionel Messi.

The Argentina captain picked out Lautaro Martinez to head into an empty net to send Lionel Scaloni’s men into the 2026 World Cup final with a 2-1 win over their rivals.

Who will Argentina play in the World Cup final?

Argentina are looking to become just the team to win back-to-back World Cups after Italy and Brazil.

However, they will need to overcome European champions Spain in order to win the World Cup for the fourth time.

La Roja booked their spot in the summer showpiece with a 2-0 win over France on Tuesday as goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro saw Spain down Les Bleus.
