Morgan Rielly drops truth bomb amid uncertain Maple Leafs future

There is growing speculation that Morgan Rielly may not be playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs next season. Rielly hears that noise, and addressed it in recent remarks.

Toronto’s loss to the Dallas Stars on Monday could have been Rielly’s final home game as a Leaf. He admitted that he has thought about that.

“It’s crossed my mind before,” Rielly said, per The Fourth Period. “All athletes you know have that at some point – they think about that, and tonight’s no different than that.”

Rumors abound that Toronto will be trading the defenseman this offseason. The Leafs are bringing in a new general manager, and a few teams including the San Jose Sharks have shown interest in Rielly. Seattle and Chicago are also reportedly in the mix.

“Rielly has four more seasons remaining on his contract after this one and comes with a $7.5 million salary cap hit,” the outlet reported.

No matter what happens this offseason, Rielly says he truly loves Toronto.

“It’s an outstanding place to play and a great place to live,” he said. “This organization means a lot to a lot of people and so to be a part of it, it’s an honour and I don’t believe that that’s lost on anyone in here.”

Rielly has posted 36 points on the season. He has appeared in 77 games on the campaign for the Maple Leafs. Toronto has just 78 points on the year and will miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Leafs close the season with a game Wednesday on the road at the Ottawa Senators. Toronto has dropped six games in a row.
