Mohamed Salah delivers game-winning goal in Egypt’s first-ever World Cup win

Mohamed Salah led his team to victory with a game-winning goal in Egypt’s 3-1 victory over New Zealand during Matchday 2 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday night.

Salah is taking part in the second World Cup of his career with his country. He led them to their first appearance since 1990 for the 2018 edition in Russia. Even though the Egyptians lost all three games that year, he managed to bag two goals to make sure his nation didn’t exit the group stage without something to be proud about.

This time around, Salah looked to help Egypt make a statement in this year’s World Cup after missing out on the 2022 tournament. They started out promising, pulling off a stunning 1-1 draw against Belgium, who is the favorite to come out of the group.

Egypt prepared for its clash against New Zealand, a game they needed to win to finish within the top three of the group. Despite going down 1-0 early on, the Egyptians fired back three unanswered goals to cruise to victory.

One of those goals featured Salah, which happened during the second half of the match during the 67th minute. It involved great ball movement between him and his teammates as he landed a perfect strike on the ball, getting it past New Zealand’s goalkeeper to obtain the third World Cup goal of his career.

What’s next for Mohamed Salah, Egypt after beating New Zealand

Mohamed Salah did something incredible for Egypt, getting the country their first win in a World Cup match after outmatching New Zealand.

Egypt improved to first place in the Group G standings, having four points and counting after one win and a draw. They are above Iran, Belgium and New Zealand at the moment.

The Egyptians will look forward to their group finale, hoping to secure first or second place in the standings. They prepare for a clash against Iran on June 26 at 11 p.m. ET.
