MLBPA smashes league proposal amid CBA negotiations

While fans have been wondering what the next collective bargaining agreement (CBA) proposal will look like from the MLB, Thursday saw the newest one drop with changes surrounding player compensation, an international draft, and more. As negotiations have gone back and forth with no end in sight regarding MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and his CBA proposals, it seems like that sentiment will stay as the players’ association has fired back.

As shared in a press release to the media, Bob Nightengale took to social media to post what the MLBPA responded to the league’s new proposal. They went as far as to call it “flat out bad for baseball,” with them claiming that some of the proposals “would cripple the next generation of players,” as they listed why that would be the case:

“Eliminate over a billion dollars in player compensation from the international and domestic system over the next five years, with a $400 million reduction from 2026 to 2027 alone,” the MLBPA wrote. “Destroy fundamental player rights and remove talent from our sport by barring high school and junior college players (anyone under age 20) from the domestic draft.”

The MLBPA takes issue with MLB’s international draft proposal

While an international draft was one of the MLB’s proposals in their attempt at a reasonable CBA, the players’ association found issue with it. Explaining how that would, in effect, “abolish an entire year of international signings by delaying the first draft until at least September of 2027 (and as late as March of 2028).”

“Denying young international players the ability to start their professional careers,” the MLBPA wrote. “Players remain committed to bargaining in good faith and leaving baseball better than they found it – the league’s proposals fall woefully short.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen when the MLB and the MLBPA will come to an agreement on a CBA that will be mutually beneficial.
