MLB rumors: Why Tarik Skubal might not fetch biggest trade package at deadline
With the Detroit Tigers receiving trade calls about Tarik Skubal, many Major League Baseball insiders believe it will take a lot of resources to get him out of Detroit. According to a new report though, Skubal may not fetch the biggest trade package ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale believes Los Angeles Angels pitcher Reid Detmers may fetch even more at the deadline.
“If the Angels changed their mind and made Detmers available, they could demand a package greater than the one the Tigers will receive for two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. He not only has two more years of control than Skubal, but is earning just $2.7 million,” Nightengale wrote.
The Angels are not expected at this time to make Detmers available for a trade. The Angels pitcher has a 3.68 ERA this season, with three victories.
He has been throwing heat the last few starts.
“Detmers’ last three starts: 1-0, 0.45 ERA, 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 18 strikeouts, 20 innings,” Nightengale added.
This season, the Angels are struggling yet again. Los Angeles is last in the American League West. The club holds a 31-47 record on the season. Detmers is clearly a bright spot.
“Detmers has been quite inconsistent during his career and even spent all of 2025 in the bullpen, but the former top prospect is having a breakout campaign in ’26. He’s recorded a 1.36 ERA with 39 K’s over his past five starts and entered Friday with the fourth-lowest expected ERA (2.77) among pitchers who have faced at least 250 batters, behind Jacob Misiorowski, Paul Skenes and Shohei Ohtani,” MLB.com reported.
It is Skubal that is getting all the attention right now. The Tigers pitcher, who recently returned from injury, has virtually every big spender in MLB asking about him. Skubal has won the American League Cy Young the last two seasons.
The MLB trade deadline this season is August 3.
