MLB rumors: The Red Sox player Yankees likely won’t trade for not named Aroldis Chapman

The New York Yankees are in great shape after taking two of three games on the road from the Detroit Tigers. They are sitting in first place in the American League East despite key injuries to Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and members of the pitching staff. They hold a 2.5-game over the second-place Tampa Bay Rays and they own the best overall record in the American League.

Even with that advantage over their competitors, the Yankees are looking to add to their roster and improve in a few key areas. Those areas include the starting pitching and the bullpen.

They may not be desperate needs, but  senior vice president/ general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone are always interested in improving the team. However, don’t expect the Yankees to bring up the names of Aroldis Chapman or Sonny Gray in conversations with the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox are among the most disappointing teams in baseball and are buried in last place in the division. They just lost 2 of 3 games to the Colorado Rockies, and the season is a full-fledged disaster. The Red Sox are likely to be in a full sell mode very shortly.

However, Chapman and Gray are both former Yankees. While both are among the few Red Sox who are having good seasons, the Bronx Bombers will not come calling, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.

Chapman’s tenure with the Yankees ended in ignominious fashion as he got beaten up in postseason confrontations with the Houston Astros. Gray has been on a tremendous roll for the Red Sox, but he struggled in 2017 and ’18 while pitching for the Yankees.

If the Yankees make moves to upgrade the roster, it won’t be with Chapman and Gray.
