MLB rumors: Insider names Mets, Red Sox pitchers as possible Tigers trade targets

The Detroit Tigers got some terrible news on Monday when it was announced that starting pitcher Tarik Skubal would have to miss at least a few months of the season. Skubal is dealing with an elbow injury that will keep him out. A Major League Baseball insider is dropping some names that the Tigers may hope to trade for in order to help shore up the starting rotation.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand says both the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets have hurlers that could head to Detroit.

“If Boston ultimately becomes a seller, Sonny Gray could become trade bait come July. The Red Sox are off to a disappointing start, though even entering Monday at 13-21, Boston was only three games back in the AL Wild Card race; in fact, no team in the AL was more than 3 1/2 games out of a playoff spot with three-quarters of the season still to be played,” Feinsand wrote.

The insider thinks the Mets have a few options that could help the Tigers.

“If the Mets continue to falter, Freddy Peralta — a free agent at the end of the season — could be an interesting option. The same goes for Clay Holmes, who has a $12 million player option for 2027 that he will likely decline based on the way his season is trending,” Feinsand wrote.

The Tigers have big shoes to fill with Skubal out. Detroit’s ace won the American League Cy Young in 2024, and 2025. He has also been named an All-Star the last two seasons.

The Tigers are in an American League Central that seems wide open for the taking this season. Every team in the division is hanging around .500 overall. Detroit holds a 18-18 record, and is tied for first in the division.
