MLB commissioner Rob Manfred makes ‘wildly inappropriate’ confession on possible Trump intervention in negotiations

Donald Trump has long been known to be a major sports fan. The President has also been known to intervene in the world of sports when he decides to. Trump did just that in the FIFA-Flo Balogun red card situation. Now, with negotiations between MLB and MLBPA on a new collective bargaining agreement, there is the possibility that Trump attempts to intervene.

Rob Manfred, MLB’s commissioner, is now commenting on the idea that the President of the United States could get involved in negotiations, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

“Look, I think it would be wildly, wildly inappropriate for me to speculate what the president of the United States might do or not do in a hypothetical situation. We know this. He’s a great sports fan, and he is really knowledgeable about the business of sports, so it doesn’t surprise me. He’s interested, but behind that, I’m going to pass,” Manfred said.

Manfred noted he would pass on the idea of Trump stepping in, but the President seems to be on the same side as the owners when it comes to a salary cap, previously commenting on the idea.

“If you don’t have a salary cap, you don’t have a sport. They can’t help themselves. In sports, they can’t help themselves. Football has a salary cap. They should have done it a long time ago. I know so much about sports, they should have done it a long time ago,” Trump said. “Major League Baseball — it’s shocking, frankly, that they didn’t put a cap on many years ago. They had a chance to do a cap, and they blew it.”

MLB has never had a salary cap, and players are firmly against it. The last time MLB proposed a salary cap, it led to a work stoppage that cancelled the 1994 World Series.
