Milan vs Inter predictions

Every Milan derby is a huge occasion in Italian football, but even more so when the teams from the country’s second city are in the top two of Serie A.

Indeed, there are more than local bragging rights up for grabs when AC Milan and Inter renew hostilities this weekend. Anything less than a win for the former would surely end the title race in favour of the latter. 

As things stand, Inter boast a 10-point advantage at the summit of the standings. They may have been knocked out of the Champions League by Bodo/Glimt last month, but the Nerazzurri’s record in Serie A speaks for itself.

Inter have won each of their last eight matches in Italy’s top tier, but their fantastic form stretches further back than that.

In fact, Christian Chivu’s team have been close to perfect ever since they lost 1-0 to Milan in the first Derby della Madonnina of the season in November. From the 45 points available since that match, Inter have collected an extraordinary 43. 

Given such a record, it is hard to be too critical of the likes of Milan, Napoli and Roma for failing to keep pace.

That is not to say that the above trio have been perfect. Milan have managed to stay closest to Inter, but they have had some frustrating results along the way, the latest of which was a 1-0 home defeat by Parma the weekend before last.

That was only their second defeat of 2025/26, but Max Allegri’s men have been guilty of drawing too many games. 

There is no great shame in sharing the spoils with the likes of Juventus, Atalanta, Roma and high-flying Como, but Milan have dropped 10 points in draws with Pisa, Parma, Sassuolo, Genoa and Fiorentina.

Still, the Rossoneri did not necessarily expect to mount a title challenge in Allegri’s first season back at the helm. Qualifying for the Champions League was Milan’s main aim last summer and they are well positioned to do that.

As for Inter, Chivu has exceeded expectations after replacing Simone Inzaghi. Exiting the Champions League in the knockout phase play-offs was obviously a major disappointment, but Inter are in the hunt for a domestic double.

A victory over their rivals this weekend would move them a step closer to achieving one half of that goal.

Milan and Inter are ready to do battle this weekend in a crunch clash at the top of Serie A.

Inter to triumph

Milan came out on top the last time these two teams faced off, but Inter have been on another level since then.

Knowing that success on Sunday would realistically put them out of reach of the chasing pack is quite the incentive for Chivu’s team.

Milan are capable of making life difficult for Inter. Allegri’s tactics arguably work better against teams like the Nerazzurri who will dominate the ball.

It is unlikely to be plain sailing for Inter, but they are ultimately a better team than Milan and that should make all the difference this weekend.

Inter’s defensive record is not bad, but it is not the reason they are top of Serie A.

Chivu’s charges have conceded 21 goals up to now – more than Roma (19), Como and Milan (both 20).

Inter are on course to win the scudetto because they have outgunned everyone else in attack, scoring 64 goals in 27 matches.

That works out at an average of 2.37 strikes every 90 minutes. Milan may end up picking the ball out of their own net at least twice at San Siro.

Calhanoglu can bag

Marcus Thuram and Pio Esposito are the two obvious Inter choices in the anytime scorer market.

From the perspective of value, though, it is worth a flutter on Hakan Calhanoglu making the net ripple.

The 32-year-old is Inter’s designated penalty-taker, a status which provides him one clear route to goal. Calhanoglu also chips in from open play from time to time.

In the Inter dressing room, only Martinez has been more prolific than Calhanoglu this term. At the odds available, back the Turkey international to make his mark against his former employers.
