Miami lands SEC blocks leader in transfer portal

Miami (FL) basketball engaged in a battle with Arkansas for Somto Cyril of Georgia. The Hurricanes and Jai Lucas rise as the victors for his services.

Cyril heads to Coral Gables in a massive College Basketball Transfer Portal win. Joe Tipton of On3/Rivals confirmed the portal move Sunday afternoon.

Lucas and Miami land a chiseled post defender here. The 6-foot-11 center swatted 2.2 blocks per game for the Bulldogs. The Nigerian native finished second in the Southeastern Conference with 74, leading to All-SEC Defensive Team honors.

Cyril handed Auburn the most fits in the paint; dropping 15 points and blocking six shots. Miami delivered its push for Cyril four days earlier.

“A couple of schools to watch with him are Arkansas and Miami. I’m watching the ‘Canes the closest as they’re making a strong push,” Tipton wrote in revealing Miami’s interest for Cyril.

The Bulldogs are enduring massive roster turnover, meanwhile. Georgia has lost Dylan James and Jeremiah Wilkinson before Cyril’s decision. Georgia became a round one exit in March Madness, taking the obliterating 102-77 loss to Saint Louis.

Miami immediately became a winner under Lucas. The former Duke assistant shattered the school record for most victories (26) during his first season. Lucas also joined Jim Larranaga, Frank Haith, Perry Clark, Leonard Hamilton, and Bruce Hale as the only Hurricane coaches to deliver a 20-win season.

The ‘Canes pushed Purdue to the limit in their second round game before falling 79-69. Yet Miami pounded the Boilermakers with 34 points in the paint.

Cyril now boosts the frontcourt in the 305 region as the biggest portal coup for the ‘Canes.
