Mets’ Tyrone Taylor ends absurd 131-game nightmare in win vs. Yankees

The New York Mets were trailing by three and down to their final out in their Sunday matchup against the New York Yankees. But then Tyrone Taylor stepped to the plate. His three-run home run sent the game into extra innings. The Mets would go on to win 7-6.

Taylor’s home run not only won New York the game, but ending an ugly losing streak for the franchise. The Mets entered Sunday’s game having lost their last 131 games when trailing by 3+ runs in the ninth inning. Their last win of that nature came back on May, 17 2023 against the Tampa Bay Rays, via ESPN Insights.

Both teams were tied at one until the Yankees went on a four-run barrage in the fifth inning. Catcher Luis Torrens answered with a two-run double, but a bases loaded walk in the seventh upped the Pinstripes’ lead to 6-3. Taylor gave the Mets a shot of adrenaline when they least expected it, and rookie Carson Benge made sure it counted with a game-winning fielder’s choice in the 10th.

New York needs to find some form of spark if they wish to continue turning things around. Even with their win on Sunday, the Mets are 20-26 on the season. Still, they have now won five of their last six games. Perhaps the franchise is starting to find the true form they expected to have entering the 2026 season.

As they attempt to continue that turnaround, Taylor may not be the most reliable source of run production. He entered Sunday’s game hitting .182 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. However, the Mets certainly aren’t complaining after their latest win. And Taylor has proven he stays ready when his name is called.
