Mets the latest victim of Sunday’s walk-off party with Marlins’ grand-slam stunner

It’s a Sunday full of walk-offs in MLB, with Aaron Judge and Colton Cowser going deep to win games early. Then, the New York Mets suffered defeat at the hands of Heriberto Hernandez and the Miami Marlins. Hernandez hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth, completing a sweep of the Mets in Miami.

Hernandez had just one homer in 99 plate appearances before coming into Sunday’s game as a pinch hitter. He reached on an infield single in the seventh inning, but did not score. With a scoreless tie heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Mets went to closer Devin Williams. But the righty could not hold off the Fish, as Hernandez smoked a grand slam with one out to win the game.

This brutal outing, 0.1 innings, two hits, four earned runs, and two walks, ends a great run for Williams. The Mets closer had done ten consecutive outings without allowing a run, crediting a pitch-tipping change to his re-found success. But with a chance to salvage an important series against a division rival, Williams blew up.

The Mets are now 22-31, which leaves them in the basement of the NL East. They could have passed the Marlins in the standings this weekend, but were swept out of Miami by the up-and-coming Fish. Williams was brought in after a dismal run with the Yankees and has turned things around.

The Mets scratched Juan Soto from the game due to an illness, and their offense suffered. They managed just five hits in the game, but one of them did come from MJ Melendez, who took over as the designated hitter.

Just as it seemed like the Mets had turned things around, they had a disastrous weekend in Miami. They try to bury it next against the Cincinnati Reds at home.
