Mets rumors: Ken Rosenthal says quiet part out loud about New York’s Carlos Mendoza situation

While the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies fired their respective managers this season, there is a belief that the New York Mets could be next with Carlos Mendoza. However, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal sparked rumors on Saturday after claiming that the franchise does not want to fire Mendoza, but the organization never officially stated his job is safe for the entire 2026 campaign.

During an appearance on “Fox Sports: MLB,” Rosenthal claimed David Stearns, the Mets’ President of Baseball Operations, stated that the club doesn’t plan on moving on from Mendoza as the manager. However, Rosenthal followed that statement up explaining how the franchise could change its mind if the struggles continue.

“The President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, told MLB.com yesterday, ‘We don’t view this as a manager problem, and we don’t intend to make a change.’ Now, he didn’t say Carlos Mendoza is our manager for the rest of the season,” said Rosenthal. “If you recall, [Stearns’] Phillies counterpart, Dave Dombrowski, a week before Rob Thomson was fired, said much the same thing about Rob Thomson. So, things can change.

“The Mets remain in a soft part of their schedule. It started last night, a trip to Anaheim. Colorado and Arizona [coming up]. But we’ve seen, [the Mets] have injuries… They’ve got poor roster construction, or at least questionable roster construction as it appears, and until they start hitting… They’re not going to turn around.”

Only time will tell how the Mets’ front office will handle the situation as the season progresses. Carlos Mendoza and the team will have a chance to earn some wins in their upcoming games, as they are playing against the Los Angeles Angels, Colorado Rockies, and Arizona Diamondbacks in their next few series.

The Mets will be taking on the Angels on Saturday after earning a 4-3 win on Friday. It will be the second contest of a three-game series that begins at 9:38 p.m. EST.
