Mets rumors: How Freddy Peralta’s Max Fried-like free agency demands could impact trade deadline

The New York Mets traded for Freddy Peralta with hopes that he’d lead them to the playoffs. With those plans not coming to fruition, Peralta may again be on the move.

With the right-hander set to hit free agency after the season, the Mets are sure to receive trade calls on Peralta. But any team planning to acquire him must be ready to break out the check books, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

“If a team acquires New York Mets ace Freddy Peralta at the trade deadline and wants to keep him, they better be ready to pay up,” Nightengale wrote. “Peralta will be seeking a free-agent contract similar to Max Fried’s eight-year, $218 million contract deal, according to those familiar with Peralta’s expectations.”

Through his first 13 games with the Mets, Peralta holds a 3.63 ERA and a 74/30 K/BB ratio. He is coming off of one of his strongest starts of the season, throwing six innings of one-run baseball against the Seattle Mariners, striking out six.

While New York may be struggling, opposing teams won’t hold that solely against Peralta. He came to the Mets with two All-Star Game appearances under his belt. Furthermore, the righty holds a 3.59 ERA and a 1,227/390 K/BB ratio over his nine years in MLB.

Whether the Mets actually decide to trade Peralta is yet to be seen. But if he is going to walk in free agency, New York would like to get something back in return. If the former All-Star does remain on the roster, then the Mets themselves may be trying to work out a long-term, pricey extension.
