Mets’ Juan Soto breaks MLB record previously held by Mickey Mantle
The New York Mets earned a 2-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Thursday, ending the four-game series 2-2. While New York gets back in the win column, Juan Soto managed to break an MLB record that was previously held by league legend Mickey Mantle.
During Thursday’s contest, the 27-year-old slugger recorded his 100th career stolen base. The accomplishment made him the first player to reach 100+ stolen bases, 200+ home runs, 900 or more walks in just 1,131st career games,” according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com. He snaps Mantle’s record, which he set in 1,257 career games played.
It’s not every day somebody breaks a Mickey Mantle record. Especially considering Mantle is considered one of MLB’s greatest players ever. In 18 years playing in the league, the Hall of Famer owned a .298 career batting average while totaling 2,415 hits and 536 home runs.
While it’s been a rough season so far for the Mets, the nine-year veteran is enjoying a stellar campaign through 34 games played. In his 127 at-bats, Soto has recorded 38 hits, nine home runs, 20 RBIs, and four stolen bases, giving him a .299 batting average and .392 OBP.
Juan Soto has put up those numbers even while dealing with nagging injuries this season. The Dominican Republic native has dealt with several injuries, including forearm tightness, a right calf strain, wrist/arm discomfort, and a right ankle issue.
It’s been an impressive year for the four-time All-Star, but his team is still very much struggling in 2026. Although the club earned a win on Thursday, the Mets are still just 22-28 on the season. New York will have a chance to earn another win on Friday when the team takes on the Miami Marlins on the road.
