Mets’ Carlos Mendoza gets real on Brett Baty’s costly missed play vs. Diamondbacks

The New York Mets entered the seventh inning up 1-0. But then, things took a turn for the worse, and the Mets stumbled horribly, leading to a four-run seventh for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Manager Carlos Mendoza got real about Brent Baty’s costly missed play on a hit by Gabriel Moreno, which could have led to the defeat, according to Phillip Martinez of SNY.

“I don’t think so. He was a little shallow there. Moreno got a good piece on that one. I don’t think Baty had a chance on that one there,” Mendoza told Martinez.

Moreno’s hit went to deep right field, and Baty went back to try to catch it. But Baty crashed into the wall while the ball pinged off it and gave the D-Backs a few seconds, which led to the tying run. From that point, the Diamondbacks were able to explode and add a few more runs en route to a 7-1 win.

It was another night of disappointment for the Mets, who have started 7-6 despite reloading their roster in the offseason. Likewise, the Mets were again without Juan Soto, who is out with a minor calf strain. It was not a good three-game set, as New York dropped two of three to Arizona.

The Mets still have plenty of time. Currently, they are one game behind the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins for first in the NL East. While the series loss was disappointing, they have a chance to rebound in the weekend series with the Athletics. After that, they will head west to face the Los Angeles Dodgers.
