Mets call up an outfield prospect with Noah Syndergaard ties
Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard helped define an era of New York Mets baseball. The two starters were among the best pitchers in baseball during their heydays. DeGrom made four All-Star games and was a back-to-back Cy Young winner when he played in Queens, and Syndergaard was a 2016 All-Star who grew to fame with the nickname ‘Thor’ with the Mets.
Both players are long gone from New York, though. DeGrom is still doing his thing, but with the Texas Rangers. He hasn’t been with the Mets since 2022. Syndergaard left the team even earlier, departing from New York after the 2021 season. Thor is out of MLB altogether now. Despite that, both former star pitchers are still making an impact for the Mets.
After spending loads of money on players such as Juan Soto, Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and Bo Bichette in recent years, the team has surprisingly struggled. At 21-26, the Mets are in last place in the National League East, and they’ve had to make some surprising roster moves as of late. That has included calling up prospects who few would have thought would have a big role coming into the year.
The team promoted AJ Ewing last week. While the outfielder/second baseman is their number one prospect, he had an ETA of 2027, so this early promotion was somewhat surprising. More recently, New York brought Nick Morabito up onto the major league roster. The team’s number 12 prospect is an outfielder with great speed.
Ewing was drafted 134th overall in 2023 with a pick the Mets received in compensation for deGrom’s departure to the Rangers. Morabito was drafted 75th overall as a compensatory pick received for when Syndergaard left for the Los Angeles Angels. At the time, those departures were devastating, and not much was expected from the draft capital the team received in return, but now the Mets will be relying on these youngsters to help get them back on track. Who knows, perhaps they will perform as well as the stars who came before them.
