Mets’ Andy Green takes cryptic shot at Ronny Mauricio after dreadful 8th inning at-bat

The New York Mets fell to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday 5-4, dropping to 35-49 on the season. One of the biggest issues was the Mets coming up empty in the eighth inning.

New York had the bases loaded with only one out. But on a 1-0 pitch, Ronny Mauricio popped up to second base. Francisco Alvarez would then strike out, leaving the Mets scoreless despite their prime position. After the game, interim manager Andy Green took a subtle shot at Mauricio’s decision to swing, via John Harper of SNY.

“There were certain times when we had takes on today,” Green said. “There are times when you want aggression on pitches that you should be able to handle. So, different points in time there were takes on, different points in time they were turned loose.”

Prior to Mauricio’s pop out, Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering had thrown nine straight balls. The bases were loaded because of three walks. In a 1-0 count with the bases loaded, Green was likely expecting Mauricio to take a pitch – although he didn’t specifically confirm that aspect of the play.

While Alvarez deserves blame for the strikeout as well, Mauricio’s at-bat slowed New York’s momentum to a near halt. Outside of a Brett Baty walk, all chance of further comeback in the ninth inning was wiped away by Phillies closer Jhoan Duran.

Their latest loss only piles on to what has been a season to forget for the Mets. The fact Green was the one answering questions after the game was because manager Carlos Mendoza was fired. That change has yet to bear a franchise turnaround.

The 2026 campaign will remain a long one for the Mets barring a miraculous comeback. But Green is at least hopeful the team comes through next time the bases are loaded with one out.
