Max Verstappen’s dad, Jos Verstappen, involved in horror crash at rally event
Jos Verstappen has escaped uninjured after a horror crash at a rally event in Belgium.
The Dutch driver had been competing in the Rallye de Wallonie on Sunday but was forced to retire from the race after his car suffered extensive damage in a crash.
Verstappen’s vehicle went off road and collided with a tree in the incident.
Fortunately, both he and co-driver Jasper Vermeulen were unhurt in the crash, though.
Rallye de Wallonie statement
Rallye de Wallonie later confirmed Verstappen’s retirement from the race in a statement following the crash.
In a post on Facebook, the event said: “The first special stage at Loyers proved disastrous for Jos Verstappen, who suffered a violent crash that sent his Skoda rolling.
“The crew is okay, but the car is badly damaged and retirement is inevitable.”
Verstappen previously competed in Formula 1 between 1994 and 2003.
During his time in F1, he made 106 race starts and twice made it onto the podium.
However, Verstappen failed to pick up a race win whilst competing for several teams including Benetton.
His best season came in his debut campaign in 1994 as Verstappen finished tenth in the Drivers’ World Championship.
After leaving the driver line-up, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2008.
The 54-year-old is also the father of four-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen.
This season is set to resume with the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, May 3 amid a one-month hiatus following the Japanese Grand Prix in March.
Fatal crash
Verstappen’s accident comes just days after a fatal crash at a 24-hour race at Nurburgring in Germany.
His son was competing at the event, which saw Juha Miettinen pass away following the crash.
A seven-car accident occurred during race one of qualifying for the 24 Hours of Nurburgring.
Verstappen was not involved in the incident, which led to the red flag being waved before ambulances arrived on the scene.
