Max Scherzer’s injury return take after bullpen confirms Blue Jays’ John Schneider optimism

Nothing has gone right for the Toronto Blue Jays this year, partly due to injuries. But the pitching staff is getting some support, with two top-end starters coming back soon. Blue Jays manager John Schneider is confident that Max Scherzer and Dylan Cease will return soon, and the former even locked in a day.

“John Schneider hinted both Dylan Cease and Max Scherzer could be back in rotation next [week]. Scherzer threw a pen today and told me he was confident that would be the case. ‘checked a lot of boxes, and recovered well.. I can tell you I’m good. Yeah, I’ll be able to go Wednesday,'” Hazel Mae of MLB International reported.

Scherzer signed a one-year deal to come back to the Blue Jays after last year’s World Series disappointment. He made five starts before right forearm tendinitis put him on the injured list. In 18.2 innings, the 3-time Cy Young winner has allowed 20 runs.

The Blue Jays entered Sunday’s action 31-34, tied with the Baltimore Orioles for third in the AL East. Without Cease and Scherzer, their rotational depth has been tested. Trey Yesavage has been sensational, keeping the train on the tracks early in the season. After his October heroics, Yesavage has a 3.16 ERA in eight starts.

Scherzer is in his 19th MLB season and second with the Blue Jays. His three Cy Young awards, along with two World Series championships and greatness in multiple playoff runs, will one day land him in the Hall of Fame. But some 300 miles west of his final baseball resting place, Scherzer is just looking to join the Blue Jays on another deep run.

The Blue Jays host the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees for three games each this upcoming week. Could Scherzer and Cease return for those key sets?
