Mavericks rumors: Marc Stein names 2 potential Jason Kidd replacements who are ‘known quantities’ in Dallas

The Dallas Mavericks are going into a new era of their organization, which means some of the people who were with them before won’t stay on the train. That was quite obvious when Jason Kidd was surprisingly let go as the head coach, and now they’ll have to find someone new to lead the team.

Less than 24 hours before the firing, there are already a few names being surfaced as possible candidates that Masai Ujiri could consider taking the job, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

“The top candidates to replace Kidd were not immediately apparent Tuesday night, but San Antonio’s Sean Sweeney and Minnesota’s Micah Nori — widely regarded around the league as future head coaches — are both known quantities in Dallas. Sweeney was the lead assistant on Kidd’s staff for the first four of his five seasons before Sweeney left to become associate head coach in San Antonio; Nori worked with Ujiri in Toronto during Ujiri’s first of two stints with the Raptors,” Stein wrote.

Sweeney has been connected to a few teams already, with one of them being the Chicago Bulls. With Sweeney actually having familiarity with the Mavericks, he could be a top candidate whenever the Spurs’ season ends.

As for Nori, he’s been known as one of the top assistants in the league for the past few seasons. He was big in helping the Timberwolves during their 2024 playoff run when Chris Finch was sidelined with an injury.

Either one of those choices would be good for the Mavericks, especially if they’re looking for someone who could lead a young group. Everyone knows that Cooper Flagg is the future of the team, but they also have other young players who will contribute at a high level for them.

Outside of Sweeney and Nori, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Ujiri had several more candidates in mind.
