Mavericks rumors: Jason Kidd’s job status gets update from Marc Stein after Masai Ujiri hire

The Dallas Mavericks recently shook things up by hiring Masai Ujiri to lead their next front office regime. Ujiri takes over for Nico Harrison, who was fired midway through last season on the heels of his disastrous decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

One question on everyone’s mind in Dallas is whether or not Ujiri is on board with the team keeping Jason Kidd around as the head coach over the long haul, and recently, NBA insider Marc Stein shed some light on that topic.

“(Patrick) Dumont has leaned on Kidd heavily since Harrison’s departure and has been said throughout the search process to be seeking a lead executive who wants to keep Kidd installed as (Cooper) Flagg’s coach given their strong working relationship,” reported Stein on his Substack, noting that Kidd is under contract for the next several years, having warded off interest from rival teams in previous seasons.

This being the case, it seems that Ujiri would not have been brought in if he was not OK with Kidd sticking around as the head man in Dallas.

As Stein mentioned, Kidd appears to have a strong relationship with newly minted Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg, who is the Mavericks’ building block moving forward, something they reiterated by trading Anthony Davis this past season.

This upcoming offseason figures to be a busy one for Ujiri and the Mavericks, as they hope for continued luck in the NBA Draft lottery, as well as figure out what to do with Kyrie Irving, who wouldn’t appear to fit the timeline for the rest of the team around Flagg.

In any case, the NBA Draft lottery is slated to take place on May 10.
