Mavericks hire Masai Ujiri as Nico Harrison replacement
The Dallas Mavericks have been searching for a new president of basketball operations ever since firing Nico Harrison earlier in the 2025-26 season. On Monday, fans got their answer as to who will be leading the front office moving forward, via a report from ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania.
“BREAKING: The Dallas Mavericks are hiring Masai Ujiri as the franchise’s new Team President and Alternate Governor, sources tell me and (Tim MacMahon),” reported Charania on X, formerly Twitter. “Ujiri ran the Toronto Raptors from 2013 to 2025, serving as the architect of the 2019 NBA championship team.”
Ujiri has been one of the most respected front office voices in the NBA landscape over the last few years, and as Charania mentioned, he played a pivotal role in building the Raptors’ 2019 championship team, thanks in large part to his big gamble to trade for San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard prior to that season.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks’ front office has been in limbo since their decision to fire Harrison, who etched his name in basketball infamy by trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers midway through the 2024-25 season. While the team partially rebounded by lucking into the chance to draft Cooper Flagg, which Harrison thankfully did not overthink, the Mavericks still took a big step back in 2025-26, not coming close to making the postseason.
Ujiri and whoever he brings along with him to help lead the new regime will hope for some more good luck when the NBA Draft lottery gets underway on May 10 in Chicago.
