Mavericks’ Cooper Flagg ruled out for rest of game vs. Bulls with concerning injury

The Dallas Mavericks may have failed to qualify for the playoffs, but Cooper Flagg still wanted to end his rookie season on a high note as they hosted the Chicago Bulls at American Airlines Center.

Unfortunately, the exact opposite happened, as Flagg has been ruled out for the rest of the game due to an ankle injury, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

Flagg was having a strong performance in the first quarter when he had to exit the contest.

“Cooper Flagg has hobbled to the locker room for treatment after scoring 10 points in his first 10 minutes of Sunday’s season finale against visiting Chicago,” wrote Stein.

It was a sorry development for the 19-year-old Flagg, who wanted to show up for the fans to close out his first year with the Mavericks.

He finished his rookie campaign with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

As Stein noted, Flagg was the first newcomer to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals since Michael Jordan, who, incidentally, starred for the Bulls.

That is a strong case for him to be named Rookie of the Year, as he is in a tight race with Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets for the coveted award. A statement showing against the Bulls could have sealed it for Flagg, but it was not meant to be.

For what it’s worth, Flagg has nothing left to prove in his rookie season. He lived up to the hype as the No. 1 pick, including setting multiple records. There is no denying that he is now the face of the Mavericks.
