Matteo Arnaldi withdraws from French Open semi-final match with illness

Many people were anticipating the French Open semi-final match between Matteo Arnaldi and Flavio Cobolli, but it unfortunately will not be happening. Arnaldi had to withdraw from the match due to an illness, according to Roland-Garros’ social media account.

“Due to a viral illness, Arnaldi has been forced to withdraw from his semi-final match against Cobolli,” Roland-Garros wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Cobolli will now face Alexander Zverev for the men’s title.

Arnaldi spoke about the decision to withdraw after vomiting the night before the match.

“It’s tough because for how the tournament was, for how many hours I spent on court, I was feeling actually very good,” Arnaldi said. “To have to withdraw from the first Slam semifinal is not something that you wish to anybody.

“I tried to get ready and tried to stay as much as I could here and tried to see if I could go on court, but every time I get up, I feel dizzy, and I don’t feel like the best. I’m pretty sure if I eat again, I’m not going to feel good. That was the right decision for me to take.”

On the morning of the match, Arnaldi called a doctor, and even after getting medication, he still couldn’t keep any food or drinks down throughout the day.

For Cobolli, he seemed to be distraught about the news.

When he [Matteo] came to me almost one hour ago, I almost cried,” Cobolli said. “You know, it’s something that you don’t expect at all. I was ready to play this match. When he came, I was completely sad for him.
