Marshall Faulk’s first game with Southern gets a huge update

Marshall Faulk’s first game with Southern University is set to receive a huge stage. The clash between the two SWAC contenders will take place at Legion Field on Saturday, August 29. The plans were recently approved by the Birmingham City Council and will serve as the setting for the first game in Faulk’s coaching career.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, who is also an alumnus of Morehouse College, spoke highly of the matchup being held at Legion Field.

“Our city continues to recruit premier sports and entertainment events. We are thrilled to build on our relationship with the SWAC and look forward to hosting Alabama State University and Southern University as we offer another great HBCU experience for fans.”

Southern University Athletic Director Roman Banks and Alabama State Vice President of Athletics Dr. Jason Cable issued a joint statement announcing the matchup moving to Legion Field.

“Southern University and Alabama State University are extremely excited to partner with the City of Birmingham for the hosting of this marquee football game at historic Legion Field. This match-up is slated to be nationally televised and should be a highly entertaining affair between two historic football programs.”

While the matchup will be a debut for Marshall Faulk, it also will be highly anticipated for HBCU fans as Andrew Body will return to Alabama State after entering the transfer portal in the offseason. Alabama State had a standout season, staying afloat in the SWAC championship race, winning 10 games and going 7-1 in conference; their lone loss was to Jackson State University.

Alabama State will look to run it back and compete with Jackson State for the SWAC East division title, as Faulk looks to make a statement by beating one of the top teams in the Eastern Division in his first game.
