Mariners rookie Colt Emerson sends family into frenzy with HR as first MLB hit

The Seattle Mariners are currently a game out of first place in the AL West. They also recently debuted the future of their franchise. Colt Emerson was called up to the majors, playing his first game on Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

Emerson went hitless against the Padres, and began Monday night against the Chicago White Sox 0-3. Then, Emerson hit a three-run shot in the eighth inning for his first MLB hit. The home run sent fans and family into a frenzy.

Emeron, who is just 20-years old, became the youngest player to hit a home run for the Mariners in a long time, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

“At 20 years and 302 days, Colt Emerson is the youngest Mariners player to homer since Jose Lopez on Sept. 13, 2004 (20y 294d). That is, of course, before Emerson was born (July 20, 2005),” Langs posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The Mariners would go on to win the game 6-1. Emerson is now hitting .167 in his two games, with a .286 on-base percentage. He has scored twice and driven in three runs thus far. Emerson’s family missed his MLB debut, but were in the stands for his first hit. The rookie spoke of the event after the game, according to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.

“Honestly, I’m speechless. I’m really just happy that they were here, and just so grateful that this is the way it happened,” Emerson said while trying to keep composed. “How can you not get emotional about that? Like, gosh. … Just the stuff that they went through to get me to this point. Gosh, they just went through a lot. And to finally see it put into life is just incredible.”

The Mariners are now 23-26 on the year, good for second in the AL West. The Mariners continue their series with the White Sox on Tuesday night.
