Marcus Semien’s concerning Mets slump gets candid admission from insider

The New York Mets have been arguably the most disappointing team in Major League Baseball, to start the 2026 season. New York has lost 11 games in a row, and fans are restless. Amidst those struggles, Mets infielder Marcus Semien has also struggled to hit the ball.

This season, Semien is hitting at a .234 batting average with one home run. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes that the Mets will stay patient with Semien.

“I’m sure they want to give him more of a chance to breathe here,” Rosenthal said on Foul Territory.

This is Semien’s first season in New York. He spent the last few years with the Texas Rangers, as well as some other teams before that in his long career.

“He too is joining a new team; he has never played in New York. I know he is experienced, but it is a different animal there,” Rosenthal added.

The Mets are just 7-15 on the season, and desperate for wins. New York is in the cellar currently of the National League East.

Mets are looking for offense

Semien is one of several New York players having some setbacks at the plate right now. New York has struggled to score runs this season. The team is currently dead last in MLB in runs scored, per league stats.

The good news for Semien is that he has been hitting better as of late. He has three total hits in his last two games played. In the team’s recent series against the Chicago Cubs, Semien posted five hits overall in three games.

New York wants to keep that momentum going. The Mets spent buckets of money on new players ahead of the 2026 season, in the hopes of reaching a World Series. New York famously missed the 2025 postseason after stumbling in the final months of the year.

The Mets start a series Tuesday with the Minnesota Twins at home.
