Marcelo Bielsa in furious outburst as Uruguay dumped out of World Cup

Marcelo Bielsa could not contain his fury after Uruguay were eliminated from the World Cup.

A 1-0 loss to Spain ensured Uruguay finished third in Group H, with tournament Cinderella story Cape Verde ahead of them in second place.

However, because Uruguay ended the group stage with just two points, they could not qualify for the round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

Bielsa lets rip

Bielsa’s frustration at an early exit was on show for all to see when, prior to a post-match interview, he angrily shouted, ‘Get on with it’.

The 70-year-old’s interview, which was conducted on the pitch in Guadalajara, Mexico, lasted just over 30 seconds.

Bielsa, who has already shown his unwillingness to engage with the media at the World Cup, was far more talkative during his post-match press conference.

“What I gave Uruguayan football is nothing, because any contribution a coach makes to a national team over three years is futile without positive outcomes,” Bielsa said.

“I don’t need to speak any further about our performance at the World Cup.

“If you ask how they are going to remember me, they will remember me as having left nothing.”

Bielsa added: “The journalists, the Uruguayan supporters, you all want to blame me for what happened, and I must take the blame. It is the only right thing to do.”

Bielsa: Uruguay star wanted to come off

Uruguay’s hopes for a knockout berth were not helped by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

The 40-year-old served up yet another costly error as he mishandled Alex Baena’s effort from inside the box just before half-time.

Muslera’s fumble meant he etched himself in World Cup infamy, marking the first time a goalkeeper had made three errors that directly led to goals in a single World Cup campaign.

The former Galatasaray glovesman was subsequently hooked at the interval, with Sergio Rochet brought on.

Intriguingly, Bielsa revealed it was not his call to take Muslera off.

“The Muslera change was not my decision, it was Fernando,” Bielsa said.

“I couldn’t boost the Uruguay players, I leave nothing to the country, with Valverde’s departure I wanted more presence in the attack.

“From my position as responsible for this passage through the World Cup, no-one is willing to listen to any explanation, and it’s natural that way.”

Manuel Ugarte is carried off on a stretcher
Ugarte’s injury blow added another sour note to Uruguay’s loss

Man down

Aside from the devastation of an early exit, Uruguay lost midfielder Manuel Ugarte to a devastating injury.

Ugarte was left writhing in agony after he accidentally collided with Mathias Olivera when trying to tackle Pedri.

Following the challenge, Ugarte needed medical treatment on the field and was eventually placed on a stretcher.

As he was carried off, Ugarte pulled his shirt over his face to hide his devastation.

The severity of Ugarte’s injury is yet to be determined.
