Maple Leafs rumors: Toronto considering Mats Sundin for hockey operations role

The Toronto Maple Leafs just missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in a decade. After missing the playoffs, Maple Leafs management is meeting with Mats Sundin to discuss the hockey operations role, according to Sportsnet.

“Sportsnet’s @FreidgeHNIC has learned that ownership will meet with the Maple Leafs’ all-time leading scorer, Mats Sundin, as soon as Friday about a role in the hockey department,” Sportsnet wrote on X.

The Maple Leafs finished 32-36-14, finishing with the second-fewest points in the Eastern Conference. Ultimately, it was a season where everything went wrong. The Leafs’ offseason goals will now shift to rebuilding their team. Overall, there were many reasons the Leafs missed the playoffs, and it has resulted in a shift in management roles.

Sundin had a tremendous career with Toronto, finishing with 564 goals and 1,349 total points across 1,346 games. Additionally, he had 63 points in 91 career playoff games. Sundin finished with 13 straight seasons with at least 70 points. But he has never been part of an NHL management team.

Coach Craig Berube could be a factor if he were to return. Ultimately, this season’s fall from grace has illustrated the problems in Toronto and what they might need to do to improve. Maple Leafs management has a tough rebuild ahead of them.

With the Leafs missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there will be many discussions about what they need to do to get back to contention. Much of that will hinge on Auston Matthews’ recovery and return to the lineup next season. Whether the Leafs go with Sundin or head in another direction, there will be plenty of work to do for the Leafs.
