Maple Leafs rumors: Insider reveals what Toronto wants in potential Matthew Knies trade

With Jason Robertson likely leaving the Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies has reportedly emerged as an offseason target for Dallas as a potential replacement.

According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, it would take an additional high pick for the Maple Leafs to cough up Knies.

“As I’ve reported, #Leafs are seeking another Top 10 pick in 2026 #NHLDraft. Sources say Toronto and Dallas had talks about Stars potentially flipping No. 7 overall from #SeaKraken in a deal for Matthew Knies to help replace Jason Robertson. All part of Thursday’s shrapnel,” Seravalli shared via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

In a separate post, Seravalli conveyed what his sources told him about the Maple Leafs also asking for a “roster player(s) in a multi-faceted package.”

Perhaps the Maple Leafs feel like they have leverage here because they don’t really have an urgent need to trade Knies. Toronto general manager John Chayka has even shut down trade rumors involving Knies.

And unlike the Stars, they are not losing someone of Robertson’s caliber. The onus here is on the Stars, who’ll have to find a way to find a top-10 pick they can use to get the Maple Leafs’ nod on a Knies trade.

Knies is still just 23 years old and has a contract with a $7.75 million cap hit that runs through the 2030-31 season.

Selected in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Maple Leafs, the Phoenix, Arizona native Knies has scored 51 goals and dished out 72 assists for 124 total points across 157 games over the last two seasons.
