Maple Leafs forward Max Domi surgery complications puts start of next season in jeopardy

The Toronto Maple Leafs are starting a new era in 2026-27. They have a new general manager and have fired Craig Berube as the head coach. The Leafs also hold the top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Along with the new era, there are rumors about the Leafs moving on from Auston Matthews.

The future of Matthews is no longer the only one in doubt for the Maple Leafs. After offseason surgery, the start of the season is now in doubt for Max Domi, according to a release from the team on X, formerly Twitter.

“Forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. Due to complications arising from the procedure, Domi will be out indefinitely. Domi will continue working with the club’s medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp,” the statement read.

The 31-year-old just completed the second year of a four-year contract extension signed ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. He also did not show many signs of being injured this year. He played in 80 games and found the back of the net 12 times, the most he has scored as a member of the Maple Leafs. He also added 24 helpers, good for 36 points. Domi also had the most powerplay points in his time with the Leafs while enjoying the most ice time as well.

No other details were given on the type of injury or what he had surgery on.

For now, the Leafs will focus on improving the roster ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, and then, they can evaluate when Domi can join that effort.
