Manny Machado gets brutally honest on Padres slump

The past week or so has not been very kind to the San Diego Padres. Heading into their Friday night contest against the New York Mets, they have lost nine of their past 10 games, including five consecutive. During this period, the Padres have gone 0-6 against the Philadelphia Phillies, which has caused quite the downward spiral for them.

Their record on the season has now fallen to 32-29; if the season were to end today, they would not be in a spot to make it to the postseason. They were comfortably in second place in the NL West, and the Arizona Diamondbacks have now caught up with them.

Prior to their Friday night ballgame, Padres slugger Manny Machado got brutally honest on the team’s slump, revealing what the team must do to snap out of this funk.

“We obviously don’t want to be going through this stand that we’ve been going through but we all know that it’s a long season and we’re gonna be better than we’ve been playing. At the end of the day, you can’t really think about the negatives and bring the negative energy around. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel,” Machado told reporters, via 97.3 The Fan.

“There’s nobody more frustrated than everyone in here.”

Machado was very calm in his response to reporters, and the Padres don’t exactly have plenty of reason to sound the alarm bells quite yet. They have 101 games left to play this season, and that is a lifetime in the majors.

A 162-game season has its ebbs and flows, and the Padres simply are not finding their rhythm as a unit. But it’s better to face adversity at this point of the season than towards the end, as they have plenty of time to figure it out without putting their postseason hopes in legitimate jeopardy just yet.
