Lucas Giolito signs contract with Padres after long free agency

The San Diego Padres have been one of the best teams in the majors this year, winning 11 of their last 12 games. One of the major stories out of the Padres this year has been involving their pitching, as closer Mason Miller has been nearly untouchable.

With the bullpen led by Miller, the Padres are addressing starting pitching, adding another pitcher per a release from the team on X, formerly Twitter.

“Welcome to San Diego, Lucas! We have signed right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito to a one-year contract with a mutual option for the 2027 season,” the Padres posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The one-year deal is worth $3 million, which will be prorated according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network

Earlier in the day, talks between the Padres and Giolito were described as “legit” by Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Now, the talks have come to fruition, as Giolito is a member of the Padres.

Giolito was the 16th overall selection of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. There were some concerns about his elbow, which led to Giolito dropping to the 16th pick instead of being selected earlier. He would need Tommy John surgery to repair his injured elbow before making his professional debut.

The pitcher moved his way up the minor league ranks and made his Nationals debut in 2016. He would be traded that winter to the White Sox, where he would become an all-star and throw a no-hitter in 2020. Giolito was traded to the Los Angeles Angels in July 2023 and then placed on Waivers that August. He would be claimed by the Cleveland Guardians, finishing the season with them.

In 2024, he signed a one-year deal with the Boston Red Sox, but ended up missing the season due to injury. He did pitch for the team in 2025. He went 10-4 with a 3.41 ERA. After the season, the pitcher declined an option and became a free agent.

Now, the long free agency is over, as Giolito is a Padre.

The Padres are 16-7 on the season, sitting tied for first in the NL West. They continue their series with the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.
