Longtime North Carolina A&T band director to retire after two decades
Dr. Kenneth Ruff, the longtime Director of University Bands at North Carolina A&T State University, is retiring after more than two decades of dedicated service—marking the end of an era for one of the nation’s most celebrated HBCU band programs. Known for his leadership, musical excellence, and lasting impact on generations of students, Dr. Kenneth Ruff helped shape the university’s band into a nationally recognized powerhouse, building a legacy that extends far beyond the field and stage.
A true Aggie, Ruff is a proud graduate of North Carolina A&T, where he earned his degree in music. He continued his academic journey in Greensboro, going on to receive a master’s degree in music education, a specialist degree in education, and a doctorate in education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Ruff’s experience in music education spans far beyond the collegiate level. Prior to returning to his alma mater, he served as assistant principal at Eastern Guilford High School, where he also led the band program as director. His career also includes time as director of bands at McLeansville Middle School and as associate director of bands at John Motley Morehead High School and Holmes Middle School in Eden, North Carolina.
At North Carolina A&T, Ruff’s leadership extended across the entire band program. As Director of University Bands, he oversaw the marching band, symphonic bands, concert band, and pep bands while also designing marching band drills and guiding the program’s overall vision and execution. His influence helped elevate the Blue and Gold Marching Machine into a symbol of pride, precision, and performance excellence.
A testament to his lifelong dedication to music and service, Ruff holds membership in several prestigious organizations, including Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, Inc., Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
As his tenure comes to a close, the Department of Bands has praised Ruff’s leadership as a “legacy of excellence and unwavering commitment,” a sentiment echoed by students, alumni, and colleagues whose lives he has impacted throughout his career.
Ruff is set to officially retire in June 2026, closing a remarkable chapter defined by passion, discipline, and an enduring commitment to excellence.
