Liverpool vs West Ham United predictions and betting tips – Reds resume top-five push

Liverpool have boosted their chances of Champions League qualification over the last couple of weeks, with Arne Slot’s side now outside the top five on goal difference alone.

They will not have everything their own way against an improving West Ham United team, however. Will Liverpool take care of business at Anfield, or can the Hammers get something?

Liverpool vs West Ham United predictions

There is nothing quite as joyous for football fans as a last-minute winner in a crucial away game.

It took Liverpool until the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time to make the breakthrough against Nottingham Forest last weekend, but for the travelling supporters inside the City Ground it was well worth the wait.

Alexis Mac Allister was the hero for Arne Slot’s side. A few minutes earlier he had had a goal chalked off, seemingly denying Liverpool all three points. But the Argentina international found a way to have the last word in the East Midlands.

It was a huge moment which had consequences at both ends of the table. For Nottingham Forest, defeat left them just two points clear of the drop zone after West Ham United’s goalless draw with Bournemouth a day earlier.

For Liverpool, it moved them level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea. The champions are now outside the Champions League places on goal difference alone.

There is no doubt this has been a difficult campaign for Liverpool. After a significant summer of outlay and a strong start on the pitch, the Reds were seen as the team to beat in the title race.

Things have not gone to plan, however, with Liverpool in effect exiting the championship conversation in the autumn. For months now the focus has been on securing a top-five finish.

It could go down to the wire, but back-to-back wins against Sunderland and Nottingham Forest have lifted the mood at Anfield, and allowed Liverpool to gain ground on the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Liverpool were far from their best at the City Ground, but the fact they ground out a victory was pleasing in its own way.

“My emotions were emotions of happiness and relief,” Slot said in his post-match press conference.

“This is probably the first time I have to do a different post-match press conference than I did throughout all these other games, because today we did not play a good game… today, I think we got more than we deserved.”

Liverpool are favourites to overcome West Ham on Saturday, but this is a tougher test than a glance at the league table might suggest.

The Hammers have improved in recent weeks and there appears to be belief in their camp that they will keep their heads above water this season.

Liverpool vs West Ham United betting tips

Liverpool and West Ham United both need the points when they face off on Saturday.

Liverpool to edge tight game

West Ham United have only lost one of their last eight matches in all competitions, and that was a 3-2 defeat by Chelsea in which the winning goal was scored in second-half injury time.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have been much harder to play against in recent weeks. They are posing a greater attacking threat and have just kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time all season.

Liverpool beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup, but their last two Premier League wins have both been by a single goal.

We anticipate another tight match for the Reds on Saturday. West Ham will fight hard, but another one-goal Liverpool win is a distinct possibility.

Goals on lower end

With the help of some investment in January, Nuno has made West Ham United’s attack much more effective of late.

They may have drawn a blank against Bournemouth last time out, but the Hammers had scored in each of their eight previous matches.

However, it is worth noting that none of their last four games have contained more than two goals.

Moreover, there have been under 3.5 goals in each of Liverpool’s last four contests. We will probably not see four strikes at Anfield.

Bowen the man for West Ham

Liverpool’s frontline has not been firing on all cylinders recently, with Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah both vulnerable to losing their place in the XI.

The same cannot be said for West Ham United’s wide forwards. Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville have both been excellent since the turn of the year.

Summerville in particular has really stood out in West Ham’s last few matches, but Bowen is our pick to find the net at Anfield.

A reliable performer over a number of years, Bowen is West Ham’s best finisher and he will be a threat to Liverpool’s backline this weekend.
