Bhatia, who left his position as director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday, is the son-in-law of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have confirmed that they have been approached in a statement.

It reads: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

The club is expected to be valued at more than $6billion in any transaction, which is one of the highest valuations ever.

It is reported that Bhatia has hired advisers to work on an offer amid the negotiations with current owners FSG.

However, he has yet to comment on the ongoing talks.

Freeing up for a new investment

As mentioned, Bhatia departed QPR on Tuesday by transferring his ownership to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.

He is said to have done this to avoid holding a stake in two clubs, which owners are not allowed to do in English football.

Speaking after his exit, Bhatia said: “Since joining the club in 2007, QPR has been a deeply important part of my life, and of my family’s life. Over nearly two decades we have shared promotions, relegations, unforgettable highs and painful lows, and the memories we have made at Loftus Road alongside the supporters will stay with us forever.

“I step back from my formal responsibilities with pride, gratitude and affection. I want to thank the players, managers, staff, the Community Trust, my fellow board members and, above all, the fans, who have made me and my family feel part of the QPR family for so many years.”

Who are the Mittal family?

Lakshmi Mittal is the executive chairman of ArcelorMittal, who are the world’s second-biggest steelmaking company.

He is also the chairman of stainless steel manufacturer Aperam.

The Mittal family are also involved in Indian Premier League cricket side Rajasthan Royals, holding a 75 per cent stake.

They also have a three per cent stake in QPR.

Bhatia is married to Lakshmi’s daughter Vanisha Mittal.

And the family are now working on a deal to acquire a stake in Liverpool and make it one of the highest-valued clubs.

Liverpool could become worth $6bn

With the prospect of becoming worth $6bn potentially becoming a reality, Liverpool would join an elite list.

The Reds are already one of the biggest clubs on the planet, but they would be fourth if they were officially valued that high.

According to Forbes, Real Madrid are the highest-valued side at a whopping $9.5bn, with Barcelona at $7.5bn.

Manchester United, who sold 25 per cent of the club to Sir Jim Ratcliffe for £1.25bn in 2023, are valued at $7.2bn.

Liverpool would slot in behind their Premier League rivals and above European giants Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are sixth, seventh and eighth on the 2026 list of most-valuable clubs in the world.
