Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu leaves preseason game vs. Sun with injury

The New York Liberty closed out their preseason schedule with a win after beating the Connecticut Sun, 79-67, at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday.

It, however, was bittersweet, as Sabrina Ionescu suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter after landing awkwardly. She was forced to leave the contest and did not return.

Ionescu finished with six points, one rebound, two assists, and three turnovers in 16 minutes.

The four-time All-Star limped to the locker room, according to Front Office Sports’ Annie Costabile. The severity of Ionescu’s ankle injury will be known soon.

“Chris DeMarco confirms what the replay showed. Sabrina Ionescu rolled her left ankle. She’ll get an MRI tomorrow,” added Costabile on X.

The Liberty are hoping that they won’t lose Ionescu to start the season, especially since they are looking to reclaim the throne they relinquished in 2025.

With Ionescu, Breanna Stewart, and Jonquel Jones all re-signing, it further signaled that New York is dead serious about claiming a second championship.

With Ionescu’s exit versus the Sun, Jones picked up the cudgels with 15 points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Marine Johannes added 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, and five steals.

“I think we did a pretty big leap. Just talking to teammates about our practices. People are feeling more comfortable. I think it showed tonight. We’re nowhere near perfect going into the season, but we understand what our foundation is,” said Jones, as quoted by Liberty reporter Myles Ehrlich.

They will meet the Sun anew on Friday for their season opener.

The Liberty dropped their preseason assignment against the Indiana Fever, 109-91, on Saturday. Ionescu only scored one point in 15 minutes. She also had two rebounds, four assists, one steal, and two turnovers.
