Liberty’s official deal with 3-time All-Star Satou Sabally leaves fans confused
The New York Liberty have been one of the better teams in the league over the past few years, and that’s not going to stop any time soon. When it was announced that 3-time All-Star Satou Sabally was signing with them, many saw it as the rich just get richer, but others were confused as to where they were getting the money to make a move like that.
Well, the contract details were released, and it makes sense as to how they were able to sign her.
“Satou Sabally’s signing with the New York Liberty is official, per the team. Her deal is for two years, $815,000 for 2026 and $855,750 (a 5% raise) for 2027, fully guaranteed, per source,” ESPN’s Alexa Philippou wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
As a player of Sabally’s caliber, many expected that she would sign for a max contract, but it looks like she took less for a chance to compete for a championship.
The fans are all over it when they found out the contract details.
“Something fishy here, a maxplayer turning down 800k????yeah right……..,” one user wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“Yes but how much is she being paid under the table to compensate for taking a pay cut here?” a second user wrote.
Some fans even went out of their way to share that Sabally was getting paid the same amount as Lexie Hull, who is more of a role player than a star on her team.
I think it’s safe to say that there isn’t any funny business going around in New York, and Sabally genuinely wanted to compete for a championship, like she did last season with the Phoenix Mercury. This was one of the teams that has been able to do so over the years, and she’ll fit right in alongside Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones.
