Latest Sabrina Ionescu injury update ahead of Caitlin Clark showdown
The New York Liberty are still searching for consistency this season, but they have won three straight games as they head into a big matchup this weekend against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. It would help if they had their own star guard in Sabrina Ionescu, and she does appear to be progressing amid a recent back injury.
Sabrina Ionescu has been sidelined for all but one of the Liberty’s games so far due to a couple of injury issues, and she will officially be questionable heading into the game against the Fever, as per WNBA reporter Myles Ehrlich. In what could be a positive sign for the Liberty, Ionescu took part in half court drills during practice on Friday.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Ionescu missed the first five games of the regular season due to an ankle and foot injury she suffered during preseason. She made her 2026 season debut on May 24 in a loss to the Dallas Wings, finishing with 11 points, five rebounds and seven assists in 31 minutes of play.
But she would be sidelined immediately after that game due to the aforementioned back issue. She’s now on the verge of potentially missing another batch of five straight games if she is not cleared to play against the Fever.
Last season, the former Oregon star was selected to her fourth consecutive All-Star appearance and was named to the All-WNBA Second Team. It was also her fourth straight second team selection. Ionescu has emerged as one of the best point guards in the league and she played a crucial role in the Liberty’s 2024 championship run.
