Latest Reds injury updates include huge Rhett Lowder news
The Cincinnati Reds hope to get a run going and climb back up the National League Central standings. Cincinnati is currently in the cellar of that division, with a 30-29 record. The Reds are getting some key injury updates on Tuesday, including one to starting pitcher Rhett Lowder.
Lowder is getting sent to Triple-A Louisville on a rehab assignment, per the team. He is dealing with right shoulder pain. The move is one of several that the Reds are making Tuesday.
Cincinnati is also designating pitchers Lyon Richardson and Brandon Leibrandt for assignment. The team is recalling right-handed pitcher Luis Mey from Louisville. Finally, the Reds are selecting the contract of right-handed pitcher Zach McCambley from Louisville.
Lowder has eight starts this season. The hurler has three victories, but has struggled with his control. He currently holds a 5.40 ERA on the campaign.
The Reds are dealing with a lot of injuries at the moment.
“We’re trying to keep our heads above water right now,” team president of baseball operations Nick Krall said, per MLB.com. “We’ve had some pitching injuries. Obviously, it’s trying to get some of those guys back. But at the same time, you have a lot of good teams in this league.
“If we can keep our heads above water, we have a shot to hang in there. You’re going to have to take some more time before we can figure out exactly who we are and what we can do.”
One area of need is the team’s bullpen. Cincinnati’s bullpen is currently 27th in ERA among MLB clubs.
“As of right now, we haven’t found anybody we can get,” Krall said. “We’d love to figure out a stabilized bullpen.”
Cincinnati is currently seven games back in the NL Central. The entire division has teams with above .500 records.
The Reds play the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
