Latest Duke recruit earns Karl-Anthony Towns comparison

The Duke Blue Devils scored a major win on the recruiting trail with the commitment of overseas sensation Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje. The Florida native has been playing as part of the youth program for FC Barcelona in Spain, and he recently drew comparisons to NBA All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns, via Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68.

“I had somebody compare him, not size-wise like bulk-wise, but skill-wise to Karl-Anthony Towns,” Goodman said. “Skilled, can pass, can shoot, it’s just gonna take some time for him. That’s where I think Duke felt like, if we’re gonna get him for two years, he can be a star in year two. And he can even be … the starter at the four … I think they love this kid’s length and skill and the development part of it for him and what he can become in year two.”

Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje’s commitment to Duke gives the Blue Devils their fifth recruit for the class of 2026, and one of the top-three recruiting classes in the country. He joins fellow five-stars in Deron Rippey Jr., Bryson Howard and Cameron Williams, and four-star Maxime Meyer as Duke’s incoming freshman for the 2026-27 season.

Although Boumtje Boumtje is a highly-touted prospect and potential NBA Draft lottery pick, he will not be able to declare for the draft after his freshman year due to his age. He will have to have played two seasons in college.

Boumtje Boumtje is the son of former NBA player Ruben Boumtje Boumtje. Ruben was the No. 50 overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He spent three years in the NBA, all with the Blazers.
