Landon Donovan reveals message Team USA amid FIFA World Cup

As teams gear up for the biggest competition on the planet, many are wondering what the host nations will be able to do when the United States, Mexico, and Canada host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This World Cup will feature 48 teams, marking the first time the competition has expanded from the 32-team tournament format. 32 teams will advance to the knockout stage while 16 will go home.

ClutchPoints recently sat down with Landon Donovan, USMNT’s all-time leading goal scorer and leader in international appearances, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to promote his new partnership with Nescafe. Among the topics discussed was the tournament and some of the teams to watch as favorites.

“I think Spain are the best team,” Donovan told ClutchPoints. “France are the most talented group of players. There are some other teams on the periphery of that like Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, England, Germany, who are in that next tier, but I would be pretty surprised if Spain or France don’t win the tournament.”

Team USA is not considered among the favorites to contend for the World Cup, but have a chance to win their group and make some noise with some strong play and the right matchups. As a former member of Team USA, Donovan also broke down what he believes USA needs to do to be considered a favorite or at least among the upper echelon of nations in this World Cup.

“This is what I always say: We don’t need to win a World Cup,” Landon Donovan added. “Of course, that would be amazing, but we just need to be one of the teams I talked about in the beginning that are competing to win it every time. So every World Cup we have, Spain France Brazil, Argentina, Germany, England, you’re like, oh they could win it. But you don’t think, ‘oh the U.S. could win it, so we want to get to a place where we’re producing players of quality that are capable of winning a World Cup. Once we get there, with all the resources, the infrastructure, the amount of people we have here, the athletic talent in this country, we will win World Cups, but we need to get to that point.”

Team USA’s World Cup tournament is off to a great start thus far, leading Paraguay 3-0 at halftime of their opening match.
