Lakers rumors: Rival exec sends ‘painful’ offseason warning

The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to enter one of the most important offseasons in recent franchise history, but a rival executive believes difficult decisions could be unavoidable as the organization attempts to improve its roster.

With the NBA Finals nearing completion and free agency approaching in July, the Lakers find themselves in a favorable financial position. However, that flexibility may come at the cost of parting ways with players who played important roles both on and off the court during the 2025-26 season.

According to a recent report from Sean Deveney of Heavy.com, one Western Conference executive believes Los Angeles will face some uncomfortable choices.

“Making choices on getting rid of players who helped on the floor and in the locker room–Smart and Hachimura, perhaps–won’t be easy,” Deveney wrote.

The executive emphasized that the Lakers’ financial flexibility creates opportunities but also increases pressure to make difficult roster decisions.

“They have cap space and that’s a great position to be in,” the executive said. “But they really like their group. They’re going to have to make a painful decision or two with that roster.”

The Lakers enter the offseason with several notable contract situations to address.

LeBron James, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard and Jaxson Hayes are all slated to become free agents. Meanwhile, veteran guard Marcus Smart holds a $6 million player option, while center Deandre Ayton possesses an $8 million player option.

Among those names, Reaves figures to be one of the organization’s top priorities. The 28-year-old guard is coming off a breakout season in which he averaged career highs of 23.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds while emerging as a key offensive partner alongside Luka Doncic.

James’ future also remains a major storyline. The four-time NBA champion recently completed his 23rd NBA season and has not yet announced whether he intends to return for a 24th campaign.

Hachimura and Smart could become particularly difficult decisions if the Lakers seek additional cap flexibility. Both players provided valuable contributions throughout the season while helping establish continuity within the locker room.

Ayton’s situation is another variable to monitor. The former No. 1 overall pick provided frontcourt depth and size, two areas the Lakers have been expected to prioritize heading into the offseason.

After falling short of championship expectations and being eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, Los Angeles faces pressure to maximize its current window around Doncic, Reaves and potentially James.

The Lakers may possess the financial flexibility necessary to pursue upgrades, but as one rival executive suggested, achieving those goals could require sacrificing pieces the organization would prefer to keep.
