Lakers’ LeBron James reveals nagging injury that has been ‘blah’ for 5 years
On Wednesday evening, the Los Angeles Lakers will look to close out their series against the Houston Rockets in Game 5 after squandering a sweep opportunity over the weekend. The Lakers are hoping for a bounce back game from LeBron James, who finally started to look his age in a rough performance in Game 4.
Recently, James revealed that he has actually been operating at less than 100 percent for the last five years, ever since he was injured on a play when then-Atlanta Hawks forward Solomon Hill collided with his ankle, sending James out of the lineup for a significant chunk of the 2020-21 season.
“My foot and my ankle ain’t been the same since. Ever since that injury, I’ve been fighting uphill to get it back to normal. But it’s been a little blah ever since,” said James, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
James also spoke on the frustration of suffering the injury amid what had been a promising 2020-21 season for the Lakers as they looked to defend their Bubble title.
“What could have been, for sure. I was playing some of the best basketball of my career up until that point and leading this franchise in the right direction and then something like that happens, a high ankle sprain, and there’s nothing you can do about that,” he said.
James didn’t look quite like himself when he returned that year, and the Lakers ended up losing in the playoffs to the eventual Western Conference champion Phoenix Suns in six games.
In the present day, James is continuing to defy Father Time by putting up huge numbers at the age of 41, and the Lakers will likely need another strong performance to close out a Rockets team that has some life heading into Game 5.
