Lakers land star of historic NCAA team after NBA Draft
The Los Angeles Lakers didn’t get their guy when they made a trade into the second round of the NBA Draft, but they landed a couple of other players they were looking at via two-way contracts in the aftermath of the draft. After agreeing to a deal with Vanderbilt forward AK Okereke, the Lakers also signed former Miami(OH) star Peter Suder to a two-way contract, as per Michael Scotto of Hoopshype.com.
It was reported that the Lakers were zeroing in on North Carolina big man Henri Veesaar when they acquired the No. 56 pick in the NBA Draft from the Chicago Bulls. But the Atlanta Hawks scooped them via trade of their own with the LA Clippers, resulting in the Lakers trading out of the second round altogether.
Now, the Lakers will look to develop their two-way contract signees through their G League affiliate in Coachella Valley. Two-way contracts do not count against the cap, and NBA teams can essentially swap them out at their leisure throughout the season. After last season’s draft, the Lakers had signed Eric Dixon to a two-way deal, but he did not make it to the regular season roster.
In Peter Suder, the Lakers are getting one of the better players in college basketball last season as well as a lights-out shooter from distance. He was also part of a historic Miami(OH) team that went 31-0 during the regular season.
He appeared 33 games during his final season in college, at a little over 31 minutes per game. He averaged 14.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 54.6 percent shooting from the field, 42.1 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 73.4 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
As part of his two-way contract, he will be limited to only 50 regular season NBA games, and ineligible for the playoffs unless his deal is converted to a standard contract. Lakers fans will no doubt get to see him, fellow two-way signee AK Okereke and first round pick Cameron Carr during summer league next month.
