Kyren Wilson pulls off audacious trick shot on the black to end Welsh Open clash

Kyren Wilson capped his first round win at the Welsh Open with a series of stunning shots.

However, he saved the best until last as he potted the black in spectacular fashion.

The world No.2 beat Liu Hongyu 4-1 on Tuesday night at Venue Cymru in Llandudno.

Wilson clinched his victory with a break of 75 in the fifth frame to advance to the last 32.

It was his series of exhibition shots after sealing the frame which caught the eye, though.

Having cleared the yellow, green, brown, blue and pink, he produced a stunning trick shot to pot the black.

His antics stunned the commentator as the crowd were left in awe of Wilson’s final shot.

With the black on its spot, he hit the ball off the back cushion towards the far corner pocket.

The black then ricocheted diagonally back down the table into the opposite corner in style.

Reacting to the shot, the commentator exclaimed: “Now, where’s the black going? He sets it up, here we go. Hold on, hold on, hold on. What a finish!”

Wilson will now face Zhou Yuelong in the last 32 on Wednesday night.

He is aiming to win the Welsh Open for the first time in his career after previously losing to Shaun Murphy in the 2020 final.

This year’s event will see the winner take home £100,000 in prize money.

Meanwhile, the player with the highest break will scoop a £5,000 bonus as part of a £550,400 pot.

Wilson’s Tour Championship goal

Wilson is hoping to use the Welsh Open, which runs until Sunday, as a way into next month’s Tour Championship.

The penultimate tournament of the snooker season sees the top 12 in the one-year rankings qualify.

However, the former world champion currently sits 22nd on that list, £102,100 adrift of the top 12.

Speaking after his win over Liu, he explained: “I was really disappointed not to be in Telford last week.

“But it has been well documented that I have had issues to deal with away from the table this season and I think I have done well to win two tournaments. And this is another opportunity this week.

“I would love to qualify for the Tour Championship although if I miss out that does give me the chance to take a break before the Crucible.”

Wilson had missed out on a place at the Players Championship, with only the top 16 on the one-year list qualifying.

Next month’s World Open in Yushan, China is the final event before the Tour Championship begins on March 30.
